That's the "freak-out number" where higher gasoline prices may start to crimp car sales, says Mike Jackson, CEO of AutoNation, the largest U.S. auto retailer. Despite the recent increase in gas prices - the average was $3.12 on Wednesday, according to AAA - Jackson hasn't seen a change in consumer behavior. Prices would have to go much higher, above their peaks in 2008, he says.
