Based on the relatively underground comic book series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim VS. The World focuses on the life of a young and jobless bass guitarist, Scott Pilgrim, who has finally laid eyes on the girl of his dreams—Ramona Flowers. Ignoring the advice of his band members and acquaintances, as well as the feelings of his new girlfriend, Pilgrim pursues the colorful Ramona only to find that she carries some epic love-life baggage, which—unfortunately for Pilgrim—manifests in the form of 7 superhuman ex-boyfriends bent on keeping new men away from Ramona at any cost. However, the somewhat awkward and anxiety-ridden Pilgrim doesn’t back down from the challenge and battles his way through a gauntlet of somewhat humorous, but extremely worthy foes, including a vegan-powered bassist from a rival band and a famous skateboarder/action film star with an ego the size of Texas.
In combination with the sardonic storyline, the film also delivers a very original and unexpected visual experience. From vibrant explosions of color via music and intense fight sequences, to comic-esque motion lines and description tags, the film effortlessly mixes classic comic book elements, real world/dream scenarios, and archetypal video game qualities into a truly unique visual presentation. In all truthfulness, it has to be seen to be appreciated, though.
Though there are some awkward moments throughout the film, as well as some weak attempts at humor here and there, the overall feel of the movie is pretty funny and original. However, it should be noted that the film is obviously aimed at a mature, but younger generation.
Out of a possible 5 stars, iSurf News gives Scott Pilgrim VS. The World a 3.5 star rating.
Scott Pilgrim VS. The World is rated PG-13 for language, stylized violence, and drug references. Though it’s not a film you would want to take your kids to, it makes a great lazy-day film for younger couples and open-minded adults alike.
