>>>About 40,000 prisoners from the California penal system may be released following a landmark Supreme Court ruling that upheld a judicial order that seeks to address overcrowding in prisons. The SC ruled that overcrowding in California’s prisons results in cruel and unusual punishment and is in violation of the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The reduction of the prison population is expected to be complied with within the next two years.
However, although the decision may address the problem of prison overcrowding in California, there are many who are apprehensive about the consequences of releasing that many inmates into society. It has been observed that prison, particularly ones that are overcrowded like in California, can harden inmates and that could pose a big problem to society at large.
