The liberals (usually Democrats) want to increase taxes by getting corporations and the wealthy to pay more in order to generate more funds for the government to spend. The conservatives (usually Republicans) want to cut down on government spending, pointing to areas of waste and inefficiency and a spending level similar to some of the European socialist governments. It is also the usual Republican line to say that the top 10% of taxpayers already pay more than 70% of all federal taxes. Taxing them more, in effect, will not likely yield enough tax revenue to mitigate our fiscal problem.
