Prior the decision, Miranda was under the guardianship of her grandmother. Miranda’s mother, Trista Crews, died in a car accident a month after Miranda’s father filed for divorce. The grounds he used for filing the divorce was that he believed that Miranda is Trista Crew’s daughter by another man. Donald Coleman impregnated Trista Crews when she was only 14 years old. That led to him being convicted for sex with an underage woman although they later married. Coleman was 38 years old when he got 14-year old Crews pregnant.
