Read more …A group of gay activists have come up with a petition to get Sesame Street’s Ernie and Bert to get married. The famous muppet buddies and roommates have long been rumored to represent a gay couple, something that creators of Sesame Street have long denied. According to the spokespeople of Sesame Street, Ernie and Bert are not gay and were created to show children that two personalities can be friends in spite of their being different. Moreover, they said that Ernie and Bert are not people -- they’re puppets. There is nothing below the waist.
The gay activists, however, seem to be looking forward to building up support for their petition through change.org, a popular site for petition generation. They say that getting Ernie and Bert to tie the knot can teach children tolerance and send out a positive message about gay couples and being a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender individual.
But conservatives say that such a petition is way too political for a show that targets impressionable pre-schoolers.
