Washington, D.C. – Today, disgraced Senator John Ensign (R-NV) announced he would not run for re-election. The senator has been the subject of a Senate Ethics Committee investigation and recent news reports, noting the appointment of outside counsel Carol Elder Bruce, have suggested the inquiry is escalating.
In response to the news, CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan issued the following statement:
“Senator Ensign’s decision not to run for re-election does not absolve the Ethics Committee of its responsibility to hold him accountable. The senator has nearly two years remaining on his term and the investigation has been ongoing for over a year-and-a-half already. The Ethics Committee should not use Sen. Ensign’s announcement as an excuse to sweep the whole matter under the rug. Senators need to know that actions have consequences. Unless and until Sen. Ensign resigns the investigation should proceed full-steam ahead.”
