However, the fringe benefits given to public school teachers like generous vacation time, pensions and retiree health plans make the total compensation for teachers roughly 50 percent above private sector levels. That public school teachers get more than those in the private sector would not be an issue if: 1) it was not observed that when these teachers join the private sector they earn less than what they did when they were working in the public schools, and 2) public school education succeeded in effectively educating the kids who went to public school. Moreover, there is also the issue of the level of difficulty in firing incompetent public school teachers.
