Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) is a severe mood disorder that causes serious shifts in mood, energy, thinking, and behavior–from the highs of mania on one extreme, to the lows of depression on the other. This is significantly different from a fleeting bad mood or good mood. Bipolar disorder I characterized by manic and depressive cycles that can last for days, weeks, or months that are severe enough to interfere with a person’s ability to function on a day-to-day basis.
During a manic episode, a person might impulsively quit a job, go on a spending binge, require little sleep, engage in promiscuous sexual activity as well as manifest other reckless behavior. During a depressive episode, the same person may not have the energy to even get out of bed, go to work, attend to personal hygiene, and may be intensely weighed down by being unemployed and in debt.
