Researchers from the University of Michigan may just be confirming what a lot of us have felt for a long time - that social rejection can feel like your heart is breaking or like you just got a kick in the gut.

The research findings show that the same regions of the brain that become active in response to painful sensory experiences are activated during the intense experience of social rejection.
