>>>A student was disciplined for improper behavior at home by his school which is part of the Lower Merion School District. Strangely enough, the evidence they presented was obtained through the webcam that was remotely activated on the school-issued laptop of said student.
When the student and his family sued the school district under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Stored Communications Act, and the Civil Rights Act—it was revealed that he was not the only one whose camera was remotely activated.
Though the students were told that the software which allowed for the remote activation was installed on their computers, they were assured that it was to be used to track down the laptop if it was stolen.
As it turns out, the IT department and some faculty have been watching/taking pictures through these webcams of the students in various states of undress and in compromising situations like an amateur reality show.
Guess what's going to happen next.
