In 2004, the U.S. signed the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, an international treaty created to address the devastating global health and economic consequences of tobacco use. While the U.S. has signed the pact, six years later it has still never been submitted to the Senate for ratification.
Ratifying the treaty commits nations to implement scientifically proven measures to reduce tobacco use, which is a major driver of the growing cancer crisis around the world.
We are urging the Obama administration to send the treaty to the Senate. If the treaty is ratified, the United States will join 168 other countries in sending a powerful message to the tobacco industry: We will not stand by and watch as lung cancer statistics rise around the world. One-third of all cancer deaths are preventable, and tobacco control is one of the first and simplest steps we can take to reduce diagnoses and make cancer a global priority.
Ask President Obama to take the next step and immediately send the treaty to the Senate for ratification.
