Is there a homophobic culture in sports?

Former Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice was fired two weeks ago after video footage showed him physically and verbally abusing his players with homophobic slurs. Since then, the web has been buzzing with people speaking out against sports culture and certain sports industries for turning a blind eye to the pervasive problem.
