When Lionel Messi was given the FIFA player of the year for the second year in a row, he was eclipsed by the woman beside him. Marta Vieira da Silva has been FIFA's player of the year for four years because yes, she is that good. Except that she has no sure spot on a team.

“Its harder for women,” Marta said on FIFA’s Web site on Monday. “The men earn a lot of money, and they have a lot of clubs they can choose to play for. We work very hard, but we’re always thinking about what might happen next year — if there’s going to be a team or a place for me.” She dedicated her award to family, and to the struggle for women’s soccer.
